Tennis Court Construction Tips

Tennis courts are an ideal residential recreational area. A well-built tennis court can significantly improve the value of your property. Read this guide for some expert tennis court construction tips.

Tip 1: Location and Size

Inspect your property to identify a suitable location to construct the tennis court. Below are some tips to help you choose a location.

  • Competition tennis courts are 23.77 metres by 10.97 metres for a doubles match. However, you will require extra space to install a fence or landscape installations such as a gazebo.
  • Check the drainage of the area. Poor drainage will affect the longevity of your tennis court.
  • Preferably, the site should have a north-south orientation to protect players from harsh sun rays.
  • If possible, the area should be relatively flat. It helps reduce the excavation works required to build the court.

Tip 2: Choosing Suitable Materials

Most property owners are often confused when choosing a material for their tennis courts. Concrete is considered expensive. However, concrete tennis courts are durable and easy to maintain. Clay and grass courts are widely used for competition purposes. However, these courts are expensive to build and require regular maintenance. Acyclic tennis courts are a preferable option for enthusiasts who would want to adjust ball speed as they construct the tennis court. Ask the contractor to install acrylic emulsion after installing a concrete or asphalt tennis court.

Tip 3: Choosing a Construction Company

An interview will help you gauge the company's experience. Below are some questions to help you interview the construction company.

  • Have you built similar courts in the past? Some construction companies will specialise in clay courts while others may deal with acyclic courts.
  • Do you have any ongoing projects? This will help you assess the company's work ethic. Besides, it is an opportunity to meet some of the company's clients.
  • What are your terms and conditions? Reputable companies may provide guarantees after installing the court.
  • How much will you charge? The company should give an accurate quote. Remember to check the extra costs.

Tip 4: Tennis Court Maintenance

Your tennis court should be clean at all times. Leaves and dirt on the surface could cause potholes and cracks. Check your drainage system to ensure stormwater is not redirected to the court. Use tennis court sealants to seal potholes and cracks on the tennis court. Ask your contractor to resurface the tennis court if it has extensive damage.

When building a tennis court, choose a suitable location, go for durable materials and work with an experienced contractor. Besides, consider the recommended tennis court maintenance tips.
